Welcome to Horror with Sir. Sturdy! This episode takes us back to one of the most controversial and terrifying broadcasts in TV history—Ghostwatch (1992). Sturdy, James, Trevor aka Uncle T of Ambassador Radio, and Mick Manhattan of The Scene Snobs will dissect this haunting mockumentary that blurred the line between fiction and reality, terrifying an entire nation.
This month’s theme is found footage horror, and Ghostwatch stands as one of the earliest and most shocking entries in the genre. Did the BBC create a nationwide séance? Did Ghostwatch pave the way for films like The Blair Witch Project? Join us as we tune into the terror and break it all down!
On Halloween night, 1992, BBC1 aired what seemed to be a live paranormal investigation into a haunted house in Northolt, London. Hosted by Michael Parkinson, Sarah Greene, Mike Smith, and Craig Charles, the program followed a family tormented by a malevolent spirit known as Pipes—a disturbing entity linked to a gruesome history of death and possession.
As the "live broadcast" unfolds, the strange occurrences escalate—shadowy figures appear in the footage, the possessed daughter speaks in a chilling voice, and callers report supernatural activity in their own homes. But when the TV studio itself becomes consumed by the paranormal, the audience realizes they may have accidentally taken part in a nationwide séance…
Was Ghostwatch just a TV stunt, or did the BBC awaken something real?
